Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill says many Republicans are “embarrassed” to be supporting their party’s presumptive presidential nominee, Donald Trump.
“I wonder how many people that are voting for him are kind of embarrassed,” McCaskill, a staunch supporter of Hillary Clinton, said Thursday on a radio program in her home state.
“I have so many friends that are. I feel for them. A lot of Republican friends are just saying, ‘we can’t let this guy be commander-in-chief. He has no idea what he’s talking about,'” she added.
The Missouri senator has long been a vocal opponent of Trump’s rhetoric and his policies, and said Thursday that he “changes his mind like he changes his shirt on matters of great consequence to this country.”
“I don’t think he even wants to grasp some of the complexities that he would be forced to deal with as president of the United States,” she said.
McCaskill claimed Trump remains wildly unpopular among key segments of the electorate because “at the end of the day [he] is a buffoon.” She attributed Clinton’s unfavorables to the former secretary of state’s “decades of public service.”
“She represents the status quo because of her name and the fact that she’s been in the public eye for so long,” the Missouri Democrat said. “And so many people want to blow up the status quo.”
