Donald Trump Jr. jokes about ‘taking out’ pop culture references after sharing Salt Bae-inspired Trump meme

Donald Trump Jr. joked about potentially ruining another popular culture reference on Thursday as he shared an image on social media that adapted the viral “Salt Bae” meme to look like President Trump.

“Newly discovered footage of Freedom Bae!!!,” Trump Jr. wrote on Instagram, modifying the “Salt Bae” moniker. “Salt Bae” was popularized in January 2017 when a video of Turkish chef and restaurateur Nusret Gokce using his signature “Cobra” move to salt meat went viral on the Internet.

“Just sprinkling a bit of freedom for all of us to enjoy this #independenceday weekend. Also continuing my quest to take out pop culture terms,” Trump Jr. continued.

Trump Jr. was referring to the backlash he received when he used the word “lit” on Twitter in the context of Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy’s retirement announcement.

“Lit” is slang for being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but recently has been more widely interpreted to mean exciting. His tweet provoked headlines like one published by website Mashable, “Donald Trump Jr. has officially killed the word ‘lit,'” because liberals were not enthused about the prospect of Trump nominating a second conservative justice to the Supreme Court in as many years.

In addition to photos of his family and various hunting trips, Trump Jr. frequently shares political images on social media supporting his father or Republican causes.
