Gov. Rick Scott lost the Florida Keys after an initial tally showed him ahead there by one vote in the race for U.S. Senate.
The Monroe County Supervisor of Elections released numbers Friday that showed Scott, the Republican in the contest, lost by 10 votes to incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., the Miami Herald reports. That tally from an election summary report showed Nelson getting 18,036 votes and Scott receiving 18,026.
An earlier tally after Tuesday’s contest showed Scott ahead by one vote.
Accounting for the change, Joyce Griffin, Monroe County supervisor of elections, said additional overseas and provisional ballots had been counted.
Scott declared victory on Election Day, but Nelson did not concede. Over the past couple days, as vote-counting carried on, the margin between the candidates narrowed to within the range of an automatic, triggering talk of a recount and accompanying legal fights.
A machine recount in Florida’s gubernatorial race between Democrat Andrew Gillum and Republican Ron DeSantis is also possible. The race for the state’s agriculture commissioner could additionally be headed to a machine recount.
