Next critique of Metro still months away

Metro has been awash in criticism from outsiders on how to run the transit agency. Within the past few weeks, a regional task force and the transit system’s official riders’ mouthpiece have recommended various ways the agency’s leadership should be restructured.

But yet another report on the matter is still months away from completion – and could miss the window on having a say in suggesting changes at the agency.

The U.S. Government Accountability Office is working on a report on how to improve the transit agency. Spokeswoman Laura Kopelson tells The Washington Examiner a final version won’t be ready until early July – meaning two full years after the deadly train crash that prompted all the introspection.

Meanwhile, Maryland, Virginia and District officials are expected to make recommendations in the next month based on the first round of reports. It is not clear, though, how long it would take to enact any substantive changes since the transit agency is governed by a compact that must be approved by all three local legislative bodies.
