At a NATO breakfast event Wednesday in which President Trump was critical of Germany, White House chief of staff John Kelly was “displeased,” but not because of the discussion, according to the White House.
Instead it was the food spread, said White House press secretary Sarah Sanders.
“[Kelly] was displeased because he was expecting a full breakfast and there were only pastries and cheese,” Sanders said in a statement to the Washington Post.

The White House said Kelly looked upset not because of Trump, but he “was displeased because he was expecting a full breakfast and there were only pastries and cheese.”

The Post report focused on the discomfort Trump’s aides displayed in their body language at the breakfast in Brussels in which Trump said Germany, a NATO member, was a “captive of Russia” due to its energy imports from the country.
Present at the breakfast were Trump, Kelly, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, and U.S. Ambassador to NATO Kay Bailey Hutchinson, among others.
Trump also revived his complaints that NATO allies were not paying their fair share. While Stoltenberg agreed, saying Trump’s message was “having an impact,” he later quipped to a Wall Street journalist, “We had excellent orange juice and toast. We had a good breakfast. Paid by the U.S.”
