Pet owners may know not to feed the wild animals (we hope), but their pets don’t know beans about the dangers of rabies. That’s why the Montgomery County Police Department is sponsoring six rabies vaccination clinics this year in an effort to get county pets vaccinated.
Maryland law requires that all dogs, cats and ferrets older than four months must be vaccinated against rabies or their owners face a $500 fine. Of course while most rabies carriers (95 percent) are wild animals, the state doesn’t want poor Fido to get bitten by a squirrel and then in turn go crazy biting kids in the neighborhood. Incidentally, public health officials advise that you don’t let your pets run around without a leash for that reason, too.
