A defiant Gary Condit refused to admit having a sexual relationship with slain intern Chandra Levy and denied having been involved in her 2001 murder.
Under oath in the first-degree murder trial of illegal immigrant Ingmar Guandique on Monday, former U.S. Rep.Condit said he would not answer any questions about their relationship out of principle and respect for Levy and her family.
“I did not commit a crime, and I did not do anything wrong,” Condit testified.
Condit bitterly described how he and his family had to dodge and hide from reporters and photographers that hounded the family in the summer of 2001 after news of his relationship with the missing intern became public. Armies of reporters had set up around his offices and his residences, including his apartment in Adams Morgan. Condit said helicopters flew around his house in California while his daughter and her friends sunbathed and the media made it seemed like the congressman was having wild parties with young women.
Court took a break and Condit was expected to testify later Tuesday afternoon.
