Russian death toll in Ukraine surpasses 18,000: Ukrainian armed forces

As Ukrainian troops regained control of the Kyiv region over the weekend, the armed forces of Ukraine on Monday updated its estimate on the number of Russian soldiers killed in action to more than 18,000.

Russia’s combat losses since the invasion began on Feb. 24 thru Sunday include approximately 18,300 personnel, 147 aircraft, 134 helicopters, 647 tanks, 330 artillery pieces, 1,844 armored personnel carriers, 147 multiple-launch rocket systems, seven boats, 1,273 vehicles, 76 fuel tankers, 92 drones, and 54 anti-aircraft systems, according to Ukrainian armed forces. The figures have not been independently verified.

“18,300 Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine. And I’m not sorry for any one of them. #WarDay #40,” Ukrainian Member of Parliament Lesia Vasylenko posted on social media on Monday after the release of the new estimates.

Ukrainian troops have reportedly retaken more than 30 towns and villages around Kyiv, according to Ukrainian officials, claiming total control of the region for the first time since the Russian invasion.

‘PLANNED GENOCIDE’: 410 BODIES FOUND IN OUTSKIRTS OF KYIV SO FAR

As towns were liberated, the bodies of hundreds of dead civilians, and of Russian soldiers as well, have been found strewn across streets.

In Bucha, about 23 miles northwest of the capital city of Kyiv, hundreds of civilians were found buried in a mass grave on Saturday, according to Ukrainian officials. Destroyed Russian armored vehicles and tanks also lined the streets of the town where Russian troops battled Ukrainian forces before retreating.

The Ukrainian estimate of the number of Russian troops killed exceeds NATO’s latest approximation of 7,000 to 15,000 killed and Russia’s count of 1,351 soldiers lost.

As of Sunday, at least 1,417 civilians have died in Ukraine since the Russian invasion began, including 121 children, according to the U.N. Human Rights Office.
