Trump takes charge of Fourth of July celebrations in DC

President Trump has taken over the planning for the Fourth of July celebrations in Washington, D.C.

Trump has moved the fireworks display from its usual location near the Washington Monument to West Potomac Park and he wants to address attendees from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Post reported Friday.

He has even been involved in discussions about small details, including whether the fireworks should be launched from a barge in the river.

The revised event, a top priority of new Interior Secretary David Bernhardt, would be called “A Salute to America.”

Trump has repeatedly tried to plan a major patriotic event in the last two years. After attending a Bastille Day parade in Paris in 2017, Trump proposed having a military parade in Washington. He then suggested having a Veterans Day parade instead, until the idea fizzled amid concerns over costs.

In February, Trump teased a Fourth of July event on Twitter. “Major fireworks display, entertainment and an address by your favorite President, me!” he wrote.

A D.C. official said the federal government should have to foot the bill for any additional costs for the changes.
