Innovative Internet firm expanding

SmartLogic Solutions is getting ready to take off.

Located in the Emerging Technology Center in Baltimore, SmartLogic Solutions LLC was founded in 2005 by Johns Hopkins University graduates Yair Flicker and John Trupiano.

The pair, who both have master?s degrees in computer science, have taken the company from offering Internet-based computer programming solutions, to helping firms with behavior-specific marketing.

And with the recent addition of a fifth full-time employee and yearly projected revenue of about $500,000, SmartLogic is well on its way to meeting its goals.

“We were computer science guys,” Trupiano said. “We wrote programs and software for our whole college lives so we were able to identify the trends of everything that was happening online.”

While offering a variety of hands-on services, the firm is also developing products that can be used by mainstream companies as well.

The newest one of these is Active Response, a software package that will help companies make the most out of their online surveys. Aside from gathering and storing data in a basic format, it can also help to track the behavior of the people filling out those questionnaires. The program is designed to find out what part of the survey people often stop at or what questions they do not answer.

And online data is becoming important. Marc Ryan, the director of analysis for Nielsen/NetRatings told Microsoft that the response to telephone surveys has dropped from 50 to 30 percent over the last 10 years.

Through compiling this data, SmartLogic can track the behavior of people filling out the surveys, information that is incredibly valuable to marketing firms.

“We would definitely like to step it up with our products,” Flicker said. “In the big picture we would like to be more balanced between products and services.”

SmartLogic is planning a launch for the new software in four weeks and, as a result, is working to create an offshoot company to support the product. SLS Interactive, the new arm of SmartLogic will help Flicker and Trupiano better sell the firm and its product to marketing and media companies.

“Everything is moving to the Web,” Trupiano said. “Nothing too interesting is happening on the desk top.”
