Biden now trusted over Trump on economic issues, polling shows

Joe Biden is more trusted on economic issues than President Trump, a poll released Wednesday shows.

Another poll from this week also showed that for the first time in many months, more people said Trump’s economic policies have hurt the economy rather than helped.

A new Politico/Morning Consult poll Wednesday shows Biden holds a 45% to 44% edge regarding who people trust to handle the economy. Furthermore, a Financial Times-Peterson Foundation poll from Tuesday found 46% of people said Trump’s economic policies have hurt the economy, versus 44% who said his policies have helped. The same poll also showed that a majority of voters, 68%, said that they are financially worse off or the same since Trump became president, tying a 12-month high.

For much of his presidency, Trump has had higher approval ratings on economic issues than on his overall performance and has made his argument for economic growth a cornerstone of his appeal to voters. The coronavirus-induced economic recession, with millions unemployed and businesses nationwide struggling, has made it more difficult to make this argument.

Trump’s campaign has said that it doesn’t see the virus or the economic struggles as a significant roadblock to his reelection. The campaign has also said it does not place much stock within most national polls taken — besides polls the campaign has conducted itself.
