Sen. Mark Warner off to India to talk business

U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., will lead a group of Democratic lawmakers to India in hopes of boosting business and cultural relationships between that country and the United States.

Warner, joined by U.S. Sens. Michael Bennet, D-Co.; Tom Udall, D-N.M.; and Reps. Joseph Crowley, D-N.Y.; and Cedric Richmond, D-La., will meet with top government and business leaders during an eight-day visit that starts Saturday. Warner is co-chair of the Senate India Caucus.

“The United States and India share a common democracy, a common language and a broad understanding of business,” Warner said. “I believe we have reached a point where it is time for the U.S.-India relationship to advance from a longtime friendship to a full partnership, and I look forward to identifying and pursuing additional opportunities for our two nations to work more closely together.”

Govs. Bob McDonnell of Virginia and Martin O’Malley of Maryland took similar trips in 2011.

On the agenda for the trip: Visiting a NBA-sponsored basketball camp and exhibition game in New Delhi, signing a partnership between the Virginia Community College System and the Wadhwani Foundation, and attending an Indian industry summit.

The delegation will also meet with security, energy, biotech and information technology executives and business officials during the visit
