Police: Five shooting victims transported to hospital, situation ‘stable’

Five people were transported out of an Alexandria baseball field where Republican lawmakers were shot at as they were practicing for a congressional charity baseball game, police officials said Wednesday.

Capitol Police and Alexandria police provided few details during a short press conference Wednesday morning.

“It’s a stable situation,” said Alexandria Police Chief Michael Brown.

Brown said the police received a call about an active shooter at 7:09 a.m.

“We know five people were transported medically from the scene,” Brown said.

Brown would provide few details, but said his department is working with Capitol Hill Police and the FBI.

Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., the House Majority Whip, was shot in the hip. Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas, was taken out on a stretcher, but Rep. Brad Wenstrup, R-Ohio, said he was not shot, and hurt himself diving into the dugout.

However, Williams confirmed later that one of his aides was shot, and was being treated.

Two police officers were also reportedly shot.

Matthew R. Verderosa, chief of the U.S. Capitol Police, said his officers arrived at the scene first.

“Officers on the scene responded and engaged a suspect in gunfire,” Verderosa said. “Very shortly after, Alexandria Police responded and at that point, we were able to calm the situation and victims were transported to the hospital.”

Police said they will provide another update later this morning.
