D.C. levee project to start soon

A $9.6 million levee project meant to help protect downtown Washington and the National Mall from a Hurricane Katrina-sized storm is expected to be underway before the end of 2010, federal officials said.

An Army Corps of Engineers review following the devastating gulf coast storm in 2005 found that the District’s 70-year-old flood protection system was inadequate. The review triggered the planning of a new barrier from the waters of the Potomac River.

On Monday, federal officials said the project will be complete by summer 2011.
