No reduced bond in dogfighting trial

The Severna Park man accused of dogfighting and drug tradingat his house was denied a reduced bond Tuesday, despite his attorney?s claim that evidence was lacking.

“This is one of the worst-investigated, worst-prepared cases of all time … sort of like a soufflé, when you put a pin in it, everything collapses,” said Andrew White, attorney for Kevin Green, 44, who was charged with animal cruelty and several drug-related charges after Anne Arundel police busted the operation in September.

“Cpl. [Michael] Harper admitted he has no evidence linking Mr. Green to dogfighting. … We?re left here with a straight-up drug case.”

White asked Anne Arundel Circuit Judge William Mulford III to decrease the $750,000 bond, saying Harper didn?t see Green fighting dogs during a two-day stakeout, and the drug charges alone don?t warrant such a high bond.

But Deputy State?s Attorney Laura Kiessling said the dogfighting did occur at Green?s residence and reminded the judge that Green was the one flushing 34.7 grams of crack cocaine down his toilet when police raided the house.

“This is the defendant?s address. It?s where he was living ? where the drug dealing and the dogfighting occurred,” Kiessling said.

Mulford said the bond was reasonable for the amount of crack cocaine despite White?s request for a no-bond house arrest so Green could see a physical therapist for gunshot wounds suffered during unrelated incidents.

Green was arrested Sept. 7 after police found at his house evidence of dogfighting equipment such as endurance-building treadmills with paw prints on the tracks and thick ropes attached to springs for strengthening dogs? jaws. Harper also saw several people building fighting “pits” out of wire-fence sections and a man carrying what appeared to be a dead dog into a shed.

Five pit bulls were found outside of the house with no food or water and three other pit bulls were found in cages, according to court records.

Anne Arundel Animal Control will not confirm the condition of the dogs, because the investigation is open.

Police also arrested Kathleen Bell, 37, a resident of the same house, who is scheduled for arraignment today in Anne Arundel Circuit Court.
