Scheels opens 220k UT sporting goods store, Sandy

SANDY, Utah (AP) — Scheels is celebrating the grand opening of its first mega-sporting goods store in Utah.

The 220,000-square foot store opened in Sandy on Saturday after 18 months of construction on South State Street off U.S. Interstate 15.

In addition to sporting goods and apparel, the new Scheels features a 16,000-gallon salt water aquarium and a 16-car Ferris wheel rising toward a skylight.

Scheels first opened in Minnesota in 1902 and now has 24 stores in 10 states in the Midwest and West. Three years ago, the family owned company opened a 295,000-square-foot store in Sparks, Nev., that it bills as the largest sporting and outdoor retail center in the world.
