Ben & Jerry’s teams up with Colin Kaepernick to unveil vegan ice cream that fights to ‘dismantle systems of oppression’

Ben & Jerry’s released a new ice cream flavor in honor of Colin Kaepernick and his “fight to dismantle systems of oppression and empower Black and Brown people.”

“We’ve teamed up with @Kaepernick7! Introducing Change the Whirled Non-Dairy, the flavor that’s supporting the fight to dismantle systems of oppression and empower Black and Brown people. Coming to freezers in 2021!” Ben & Jerry’s tweeted on Thursday.

The new flavor is vegan and features a caramel base with graham crackers and chocolate cookie swirls. Some of the proceeds will be given to Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp, which works to empower the black community.

“I’ve teamed up with @BenAndJerrys to serve up joy on the journey to justice! Today, we’re excited to introduce Change the Whirled, a new non-dairy flavor that hits shelves in early-2021! 100% of my proceeds will go to @yourrightscamp with matching support from Ben & Jerry’s,” Kaepernick tweeted of the announcement.

Kaepernick made waves when he became the first NFL player to kneel during the national anthem in 2016 to protest police brutality and systemic racism. He became a free agent in 2017 and settled with the football league over claims that it colluded against him to keep him out of a job.

He has since focused on activism, especially this summer amid protests and riots following the death of George Floyd while he was in police custody.

In July, for example, he denounced Independence Day as a “celebration of white supremacy.”

“Black ppl have been dehumanized, brutalized, criminalized + terrorized by America for centuries, & are expected to join your commemoration of ‘independence’, while you enslaved our ancestors,” he tweeted. “We reject your celebration of white supremacy & look forward to liberation for all.”
