The photo, taken by U.S. Marine Corps veteran Bo Minor, was snapped while Minor and his brother braved the flooding in Fort Gibson, Okla. The pair were in a canoe attempting to retrieve supplies along the flooding Arkansas River.

The Midwest, including Missouri, Oklahoma, and other states, has been hit with tornadoes and torrential rainfall, leading to damage throughout the area and flooding. Missouri’s state capital, Jefferson City, had multiple fatalities and homes destroyed when a tornado passed through the area Thursday.

The rescue effort photographed by Minor, who served in the USMC until 2013 with an overseas deployment in 2011-2012, wasn’t the only instance of duty rising above the weather in the midst of the harsh elements. At Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday, a soldier was photographed planting an American flag at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier while getting rained on during a tornado siren, while others reportedly fled for cover.
