Clinton camp launches ‘Mormons for Hillary’ ad featuring Utah GOP politicians

Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign unveiled a new ad on Tuesday dubbed “We are Mormons for Hillary” that features some Utah Republican politicians.

“When we’re reminded of the bounty and protection we enjoy, most of us are grateful,” the narrators say in the ad. “Our gratitude has its roots in a view of government that dates back to the pilgrims and to the successive waves of immigrants who came to this country seeking religious and political freedom and better economic opportunity.

“In this view, government is an instrument both to promote the common good and to protect individuals’ rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

Republicans featured in the ad include former Utah State Rep. Sheryl Allen and former Utah State Rep. Gen. David Irvine, as first identified by the Deseret News.

Utah is a state with a large Mormon population and a large concentration of anti-Donald Trump Republicans. Utah Sen. Mike Lee has been a stalwart opponent of Trump throughout the 2016 campaign.

After a video leaked showing Trump making remarks about using his celebrity status to take advantage of women, other Utah Republicans publicly announced their opposition to Trump last weekend, including Gov. Gary Herbert and Congressmen Jason Chaffetz and Chris Stewart.

Clinton previously made a pitch for the Mormon vote in Utah by writing an op-ed in the Deseret News in August. The Clinton campaign’s new effort may be the latest sign that it thinks it has a chance of putting deep red Utah in play next month.
