You don?t have to be a pilot, engineer or boat captain to participate in Saturday?s Baltimore County Community Waterfront Festival. The only requirement is a license to have fun.
Enjoy boating, aviation, exhibits, demonstrations, live music and food at the Baltimore County Community Waterfront Festival from 10 a.m. until sundown. The festival focuses on boating and aviation, and many fun and interactive exhibits are planned throughout the day.
The Marine Trades Association Boat Show will showcase more than 100 boats for public viewing. Sightseeing boat tours will be available from the Middle River Water Taxi. The Baltimore County Sailing Center will have a sailing demonstration, while area volunteer fire companies will conduct a water rescue demonstration. Local watermen, including County Executive Jim Smith, will compete in a boat docking contest.
Visitors to the festival will have the chance to experience more than 30 aviation and space exhibitions. Antique, military and modern airplanes and helicopters will be on display with some cockpits open for the public to sit in. WBAL TV air reporters will be available, as well as the helicopter and equipment used to film the news fromthe sky. Sightseeing rides are available from Brett Aviation and cost $25. Astronaut Dr. Tom Jones, originally from Essex, will be meeting and greeting attendees. He has been on four space shuttle missions and three space walks and recently published his fourth book, “Sky Walking: An Astronaut?s Memoir.”
Thirteen area schools will perform live music, including jazz, steel drum and chorus. Also making an appearance will be Dean Crawford and the Dunn?s River Band, who will play traditional and contemporary country, and 3 Tequila Dance, playing “Country with a kick … and a lime.”
Other events include arts and crafts activities, contests, games and a scavenger hunt. A free shuttle bus is available all day to take visitors in between exhibits and events. Picnic tables and tents will also be available.
Following the day?s events will be a fireworks show to complete the festival. All proceeds from the event benefit the Marshy Point Nature Center and the Glenn L. Martin Aviation Museum.
The festival will be held at the Lockheed Martin property along Dark Head Cove and on Martin State Airport on Wilson Point Road in Middle River. The admission is free. For more information, visit www.co.ba.md.us/News/waterfront.
