Donald Trump showed up at a Friday rally in Denver in high spirits, unconcerned about Hillary Clinton’s nominating convention, and armed with reams of economic data that he said shows Clinton was wrong when she said America is a country on the rise.
“I’m actually having a great time,” Trump said partway through his speech. “We have great people in this country, we have amazing people, and we are going to make America great again.”
He said the campaign has meant long hours, but added that “it’s fun.”
Trump has spent the last few days reacting to the Democratic convention in Philadelphia, and on Friday, he cut loose several times at rallies and over Twitter to rebut Clinton’s acceptance speech. He said Clinton painted a picture of America that Trump said simply doesn’t exist.
“She makes it sound like everything’s rosy-dory. It’s not rosy-dory, folks,” he said.
He said Clinton would bring more Syrian refugees to the U.S., which he said would only cause more problems in the U.S. like the ones Europe is seeing today.
“Our country has enough problems,” he said. “We don’t need more problems, and that’s gonna be more problems.”
And on the economic picture, Trump accused Clinton of outright lying about the weak U.S. economy.
“This is the weakest recovery in modern history,” he said. “Oh. Did she say that last night? I don’t think so.”
He said tens of millions of Americans are out of work, and 40 percent of black children are living in poverty. “Obama’s done a great job, hasn’t he?” he asked.
Trump also seemed bolstered by what he said was the poor performance from Clinton, including her speech.
“The truth is, it was a little bit on the boring side, the speech,” he said. “It’s like taking Sominex.”
“The speech was really lies,” he added before saying it was a “lot of shouting.”
Trump boasted that not only are his ideas better than hers, but the GOP convention ratings were better than those for the Democratic convention.
“In other words, we had more,” he said. “The Republican convention outdrew the Democratic convention on the big night.”
Trump didn’t forget his media sparring partners, and at one point gestured to the back of the room where the cameras were rolling. “They are the world’s most dishonest people,” he said to cheers.
He even seemed to miss some of his older sparring partners that he hasn’t had to fight in a while. “I miss my protesters,” he said.
