Flights to Ukraine halted, redirected amid brewing crisis with Russia

Some travelers hoping to visit Ukraine over the next few weeks should prepare to change plans as tensions continue to brew between the country and its neighbor Russia.

Dutch airline KLM canceled flights to Ukraine until further notice on Saturday. The airline stated that it uses “a security management system to analyze risks in order to determine safe flight routes.”


United Airlines told the Washington Examiner it would continue to have flights to Ukraine. American Airlines has not yet responded to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.

Ukrainian airline SkyUp announced Sunday that its flight from Madeira, Portugal, to Kyiv was diverted to the Moldovan capital, Chisinau. The decision came after the plane’s Irish lessor said it was banning flights in Ukrainian airspace, according to the Associated Press.

President Joe Biden warned Russian President Vladimir Putin that an invasion of Ukraine would come with “severe consequences” for Russia during a phone call Saturday morning. The phone call came a day after National security adviser Jake Sullivan asked Americans in Ukraine to leave within “24 to 48 hours,” warning the threat “is now immediate enough that this is what prudence demands.”

The White House rejected comparisons between the Afghanistan evacuation and Ukraine on Friday, with press secretary Jen Psaki stating there are “significant differences between these different scenarios.” She told reporters the White House is trying to keep Americans in Ukraine safe “by encouraging them to depart by providing them information about what the security circumstances are on the ground.”
