President Trump is on firmer political ground but still faces significant hurdles as he embarks on his 2020 re-election campaign, according to a fresh national poll released on Sunday.
The NBC News/Wall Street Journal survey showed Trump with a 46 percent approval rating among all American adults — a relatively high number for his presidency, especially in the modern era of divisive national politics.
But among registered voters, the metric that matters for Trump’s second term prospects, he still has a tough road ahead. Just 41 percent said they would vote for Trump, compared to 48 percent who said they planned to vote for his eventual Democratic challenger.
Trump also trailed in the critical category of voters who classified themselves as definitely voting for him (27 percent) and those said they would definitely vote for the Democrat (33 percent).
Additionally, by a margin of 10 percentage points, more voters professed feel “very negative” toward Trump than “very positive,” although that gap had closed by 6 points since the last NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll in January.
The survey of 900 respondents, conducted Feb. 24 – 27, had an error margin of 3.27 percentage points.
