Judge Neil Gorsuch challenged a major Democratic line of attack on his Supreme Court nomination during Wednesday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.
The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals judge expressed concern for the “most vulnerable” in fielding questions from Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah. Democratic Judiciary Committee members have blasted the high court nominee as an enemy of the “little guy” who favors corporations.
“I’m not worried about large corporations, honestly Sen. Hatch. They’ve got large armies of lawyers,” Gorsuch said Wednesday. “I’m worried about the ordinary American and sometimes the non-American.”
Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont pressed Gorsuch on his ties to wealthy former clients and asked about the recusal process the judge would follow if he became a justice.
“You look at the law, you look at the practice of your colleagues and you consult your colleagues,” when determining how to recuse oneself, Gorsuch replied.
Democrats have sought to brand Gorsuch as opposed to the working man in the three days of hearings on Gorsuch’s nomination thus far. In his remarks to Hatch, Gorsuch offered an aggressive rebuttal of this line of attack, unlike his previous answers to senators.
