Let them eat cake! And that?s just what everyone did when guests gathered recently to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Hannah More School in Reisterstown.
Who better to help event chairmen Andrea Bertrand and Ben and Sherry Lyons welcome supporters than the “Ace of Cakes” himself, Duff Goldman. Emcee Kirk McEwen of FM Talk 105.7 was overwhelmed: “Look at this party,” he exclaimed. “Cake and an open bar. I just may be waking up in these clothes tomorrow.”
Goldman, when asked by McEwen to tell guests a little bit about himself,” sized up the audience and responded: “I have to be a little careful. I see [Baltimore County judges] Sandy Williams and Vicky Ballou Watts in the audience, and I?m not sure the statute of limitations has run out on some of my past deeds.”
The evening?s main event was a celeb cake-decorating competition, judged by Goldman. Not that Socially Speaking is bitter, but Team Examiner got robbed. My ringer/partner ? Joan Barnum, wife of our circulation head honcho Michael Barnum ? helped me make the obvious winner, but Goldman gave the prize to WMAR-TV?s Mary Beth Marsden. Oh well, it was all for a great cause, as the Hannah More School is totally dedicated to students with emotional disabilities. The school has more than 160 students, according to the Board of Directors? Laurens “Mac” MacLure Jr., and the event raised almost $39,000.
BILLICK HEADS EAST
From coach to commentator to czar ? land czar that is. Former Ravens head coach Brian Billick will begin building his dream house on the Eastern Shore after purchasing 10 acres of prime real estate on the Corsica River in Centreville. He?ll be close to two very nice ? and large ? beach houses, which are owned by Russia as getaway retreats for its embassy staffers.
