Rioting broke out in Vancouver, Washington, last week after the death of Kevin Peterson, a 21-year-old black man who was shot by police during a narcotics investigation. Police say Peterson was armed with a gun during the encounter.
Protesters held a vigil for Peterson on Friday, which quickly turned violent, leading to the arrests of six people.
“Violence and destruction does not benefit anyone,” said Vancouver Police Chief James McElvain. He added that his department is “committed to working with the community toward improving trust and policing practices but does not condone criminal behavior.”
