The production behind HBO Max’s Batgirl film announced that a transgender performer will portray a critical transgender character in the upcoming project.
Ivory Aquino, an openly transgender performer, will play Alysia Yeoh, a bartender and the best friend of Batgirl, aka Barbara Gordon, according to a report.
Many in the LGBT community are marking the casting as a historical moment for representation in film.

Batgirl is slated to be the first live-action DC Comics feature film to feature a transgender performer.

Aquino is set to appear on the big screen alongside Leslie Grace, Brendan Fraser, Michael Keaton, J.K. Simmons, and Jacob Scipio.
Her casting was first leaked in early January after Grace posted an image of the pair on the film’s set to Instagram.

The film is adapted from the comic by Gail Simone, the report noted, and it is set to focus on the battle between Batgirl and Firefly, portrayed by Fraser.

The majority of details about the project still remain confidential, but Keaton will once again take up the cowl as Batman, according to the report.
