Opera returns to southern NH’s Monadnock Region

KEENE, N.H. (AP) — Opera is returning to the Monadnock Region of southern New Hampshire.

The Monadnock Music organization says it will present two one-act operas by American composer Dominick Argento at the Colonial Theatre in Keene on July 29. The operas are “The Boor” and “A Water Bird Talk.”

Organizers say “The Boor” pits a widow against a country gentleman seeking to collect an old debt. They say “A Water Bird Talk” features a lecturer whose descriptions of bird habits “come painfully close to the trials of his own life.”

Monadnock Music artistic director Gil Rose says it’s “a pleasure” to have these “lesser-known but wonderful pieces” in the region, which is popular with vacationers.

The organization’s Monadnock Music Festival usually features a wide range of music but hadn’t included opera for years.
