A freshman Democratic woman in the House says President Trump is a “combative racist” who is damaging America.
“We are at a time when we have a combative racist and often unhinged person in the White House,” said Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., in an interview with the New York Times. “That’s not going to be answered with somebody who says: Let’s come together and let’s heal and let’s all be gentle souls.”
Jayapal, who represents Seattle and most of King County, Washington, is one of several minority women who were elected to Congress in 2018.
She echoed comments made by self-proclaimed Democratic socialist and liberal firebrand Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., during a wide-ranging appearance on “60 Minutes” over the weekend.
“The president certainly didn’t invent racism. But he’s certainly given a voice to it, and expanded it, and created a platform for those things,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “When you look at the words that he uses, which are historic dog whistles of white supremacy.”
The accusations of racism, or least tolerance for racist rhetoric, from freshman lawmakers comes as Democrats gear up to launch investigations into Trump’s personal finances and conduct while in office.
Last week, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich, told supporters during a rally that Democrats would “go in an impeach the motherf–ker.”
