Hungry for change: Liberal radio host won’t eat until Biden passes voting legislation

One radio host is giving lawmakers food for thought.

Joe Madison, the host of Sirius XM’s Urban View, announced on Monday that he was going on a hunger strike as a “redress to what is just plain politically and morally wrong” in light of GOP efforts to stonewall Democratic-backed voting reforms.

“As a political protest, I am beginning a hunger strike today by abstaining from eating any solid food until Congress passes and President Biden signs the Freedom to Vote Act or the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act,” he said.

Taking action is “what drives me and inspires me,” Madison said. “So I have begun this hunger strike, I should say this, in solidarity — let me repeat, in solidarity — with all those who are calling on Congress and the president of the United States to protect our voting rights.”

The liberal radio host, better known as the “Black Eagle,” has employed similar tactics before, hosting a record-breaking radio marathon in 2015 where he was on the air for 52 hours to benefit the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Republicans in Congress have blocked multiple attempts to pass the voting legislation Madison cited. Last week, Senate Republicans blocked the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act aimed at restoring parts of the 1965 Voting Rights Act struck down by the Supreme Court. Two weeks earlier, GOP lawmakers shot down an effort to advance the Freedom to Vote Act, which would make Election Day a federal holiday and mandate no-excuse mail-in voting for all, among other provisions.

“This has become an almost weekly routine,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday. “My friends on the other side are trying to give Washington unprecedented power over how Americans cast their vote.”
