Voters in Ohio’s 11th Congressional District voted to remain blue in a special election Tuesday to replace Marcia Fudge, who left Congress to become President Joe Biden’s Housing and Urban Development secretary.
Democratic candidate Shontel Brown, who was endorsed by Biden, prevailed overwhelmingly against Republican candidate Laverne Gore for the Cleveland-based district, according to the Associated Press.
SHONTEL BROWN WINS SPECIAL OHIO DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY, GIVING ESTABLISHMENT VICTORY OVER ‘SQUAD’
Brown, considered an establishment Democrat, defeated liberal candidate Nina Turner in the August primary. Brown had the support of powerhouse politicos including House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
“I am eternally grateful,” Brown told supporters after winning the primary. “I am completely overwhelmed by all of you that have showed up and showed out on my behalf. This was a collaborative partnership of the community. This isn’t an all-or-nothing thing. This is about making progress. Sometimes, it takes compromise.”
In 2017, Brown was elected chairwoman of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party, becoming the first woman and the first black person to hold the position.
