John Kelly assured Jeff Sessions he won’t be fired or forced to resign: Report

In one of his first acts of White House chief of staff, John Kelly called Attorney General Jeff Sessions to assure him he won’t be fired, according to a report Wednesday night.

The Associated Press reported Kelly told Sessions that President Trump was still frustrated with the attorney general but is supportive of his work and does not want to fire him or force him to resign.

Late last month, Trump said he was disappointed in Sessions’ decision to recuse himself from the federal Russia investigation, and said he would not have appointed him to be attorney general had he known he would recuse himself

Sessions has since defended his recusal, and indicated he is eager to move forward with an agenda he shares with the president, especially in reducing illegal immigration and cracking down on leaks of classified information.

Since Kelly left his position as Homeland Security secretary to become chief of staff, Sessions’ name has been floated as a possible replacement to lead DHS.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders pushed back on that speculation when she said reassigning Sessions to DHS has not been discussed.
