Schools group hopes star power attracts funding

Borrowing from politicians? playbooks, a Carroll County group is planning a schools fundraiser featuring the star power of local sports and political legends.

Tickets go for $95 for dinner and $150 to mingle with Brooks Robinson, Orioles Hall of Famer; Art Donovan, the Colts legend; and two of the best-known politicos in these parts, former governors William Donald Schaefer and Robert Ehrlich Jr.

The Shining Star Tribute Gala is the largest schools fundraiser Superintendent Charles Ecker has ever heard of. And that?s saying something, considering Ecker?s spent a lifetime in public service, as superintendent of three counties and county executive of another.

“We?re hopingto raise some serious money with this,” said Nancy McCormick, chairwoman of the event.

The gala marks the first event for the year-old Carroll County Public Schools Education Foundation, which hopes to raise $250,000 this year.

Teachers often pay for supplies for after-school projects out of their own pockets, but now they can apply for grants from the foundation. The group funded 18 projects last year, including a Shakespeare play, using $50,000 from business and personal donations.

“We?re trying to get kids to expand their skills, so it?s not just the ABCs,” McCormick said.

Robinson said he was glad to help a good cause and honor longtime friend Schaefer.

“I understand they?re honoring him, and he?s been so nice to me over the years,” Robinson said. “I said I?d be glad to come.”

The organization is separate from the school system, although a few employees are on the 18-member board of parents, business leaders and teachers, including Ecker.
