Report: FBI paid at least $1.3 million to hack terrorist’s phone

FBI Director James Comey indicated today that his agency spent in excess of $1.3 million to hack into the iPhone of San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook, a move that yielded nothing of value.

“A lot,” Comey said at the Aspen security conference in London when asked how much was spent. “More than I will make in the remainder of this job, which is seven years and four months for sure. But it was, in my view, worth it.”

Forbes calculated that value to be at least $1.34 million, based on Comey’s salary of $183,000 per year.

The FBI hacked into the phone after Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that his company would not turn over requested FBI information on the phone, and would instead challenge the court order that said the company must help.
