WATCH: Trump holds prime-time address over shutdown, border

President Trump is addressing the nation from the Oval Office for the first time since taking office and will be speaking on the government shutdown and the situation at the southern border.

Trump and Democrats have been locking heads since late December when the government went into a partial shutdown after Trump insisted on $5 billion in funding for a border wall and border security. Democrats rebuffed his request and very little movement has been made.

While there has been speculation that Trump might declare a national emergency to get the border wall built, reports today indicate that Trump is leaning away from that possibility and is instead going to push harder for a compromise.

Democrats, including Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, have a response planned to be aired shortly after Trump’s to address his statements. Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Ted Lieu also have responses planned with Lieu planning to coordinate his with military veterans.
