Alan Dershowitz sues Netflix over portrayal in Jeffrey Epstein miniseries

Alan Dershowitz sued Netflix over the way he was portrayed in the streaming service’s series on Jeffrey Epstein, the late financier charged with orchestrating a sex-trafficking ring.

The Florida-based lawyer was misled about his involvement in the miniseries, Filthy Rich, he said, according to a lawsuit filed in Miami federal court. Dershowitz, 82, also accused the company of presenting “categorically false” claims from Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein’s alleged victims, that she and the lawyer had intercourse.

“Giuffre’s accusations that she had sex with Professor Dershowitz are categorically false, and Professor Dershowitz has denied and disproved the accusations — including under oath subject to the penalties of perjury,” the lawsuit read.

Netflix, which released the miniseries on May 27, 2020, said Dershowitz’s lawsuit “is without merit, and we will vigorously defend our partners and the series,” according to a statement.

Dershowitz, who served as Epstein’s attorney during a 2008 conviction for a prostitution charge, played a large role in the show, which detailed a flurry of accusations that Epstein recruited underage girls for massages and sexually molested them.

Epstein made headlines in August 2019, when federal charges were brought against him. The 66-year-old was found dead in his jail cell before he could face trial, and his death was ruled a suicide by hanging.

On Friday, two prison guards, Tova Noel and Michael Thomas, both of whom were tasked with monitoring Epstein, skirted a prison sentence and received supervised release after they admitted to falsifying jail records around the time of his death. The pair will be required to complete 100 hours of community service and be expected to cooperate fully with an investigation that is being conducted by the Justice Department’s inspector general.

Epstein’s associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, was arrested in July 2020 and charged in connection to multiple accusations of serial sex abuse alongside the financier. She pleaded not guilty to the list of offenses, and her trial is set to begin in November.
