President Joe Biden was slammed on social media Friday after praising Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam despite calling for his resignation two years ago amid a blackface controversy.
“In 2019, Biden called on Northam to resign because of his racist yearbook photos,” RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel tweeted in response to the meeting Friday between the two Democratic politicians. “Today, Biden is campaigning with him.”
“‘Governor Northam has lost all moral authority and should resign immediately’-@JoeBiden, 2/2/2019,” Townhall Managing Editor Spencer Brown tweeted, citing Biden’s own words from 2019.
“When a photo surfaced of Virginia Democrat Gov. Ralph Northam in blackface or a KKK outfit, Joe Biden called for him to ‘resign immediately,’” an official Republican National Committee Twitter account posted. “He called Northam racist. But today Biden is doing an event with him.”
“Well, since @JoeBiden was mentored by and eulogized a member of the KKK no one should be surprised he campaigned with racist governor blackface,” retired Department of Defense Intelligence Operative Tony Shaffer tweeted.
Biden appeared with Northam at an event at a rock climbing gym in Alexandria, Virginia, to celebrate the state’s loosening coronavirus restrictions.
“Governor, I really mean this,” Biden told Northam about his handling of the coronavirus. “I’m not being political. You’ve done one hell of a job, doc. You’ve done a hell of a job, and it matters.”
Two years ago, prominent politicians and media pundits on both sides of the aisle called for Northam to resign as governor after a photo of him wearing blackface in an old yearbook surfaced. Northam initially apologized for the photo, but then backtracked and said he was not in the photo but did wear blackface on another occasion.
