Virginia leads area job growth

Virginia has seen its work force grow by more than 1 percent in the past year, leading the region’s job growth. Virginia’s work force totaled 3.65 million as of March 2011, up 37,000, or 1.02 percent, from a year earlier, according to data from the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

D.C.’s work force totaled 713,000, up 5,400, or 0.76 percent, and Maryland’s work force grew by 5,400, or 0.2 percent, to 2.51 million.

EagleBank earnings rise

Bethesda-based Eagle Bancorp Inc., expanding the number of its Washington-area area branches this year, saw income rise last quarter. EagleBank had first-quarter net income of $4.8 million, or 24 cents per share, up 57 percent from net income of $3.1 million, or 15 cents per share, a year earlier.
