The District Zoning Commission last week gave preliminary approval to a plan to add two stories to the Wyndham Hotel on the 1100 block of New Hampshire Avenue, NW.
The board gave tacit approval to the plan last week, and will vote on whether to give the plan final approval on May 14. The public can submit comments on the plan to add more rooms on top of the hotel until April 5.
Zoning Commission spokeswoman Sarah Jo Bardin said the board typically does not overturn preliminary decisions.
“It’s approved but the process has to play itself out,” she said.
The board approved a change in zoning which allows the height of the structure to increase from 90 feet to 128.5 feet. When completed, the 325-room hotel would have approximately 4,000 more square feet of space.
The Wyhdham, located near downtown, has a large glass atrium and is popular with business travelers.
Representatives from the hotel did not return calls for comment.
The hotel’s decision to add rooms comes as about 25 percent of all hotel rooms are unoccupied, according to a D.K. Shifflet & Associates study.
