Netherlands-based software company Bell ID will open its first U.S. office in Herndon.

The company builds software used by government agencies and companies to manage their “smart” identification cards, according to Hugo Crawford, head of sales for the new U.S. office.

The product is approved by the U.S. General Service Administration to meet the government’s homeland security requirements, he said.

The company, which already does some U.S. business, hopes to expand its government work as well as gain additional corporate clients.

“We’re looking to build relationships with companies like BearingPoint and Lockheed Martin,” Crawford said.

Bell ID, which was founded in 1989, will maintain a U.S. office of no more than 10 people for a few years and then look into expanding, Crawford said.

It hopes to expand its Canadian business as well, and also begin doing work for clients in South America.
