Local biotechnology firm expands with acquisition

Bethesda-based BioSource Corporation has acquired McLean-based Bioniche Global Learning, company officials announced Wednesday. The acquisition is part of BioSource’s ongoing effort to grow the three-year-old company into a comprehensive services provider for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

BioSource offers a number of outsourced services, such as coordinating clinical trials, training researchers in the field and researching the effectiveness of medical devices. The firm’s clients include the top pharmaceutical companies and smaller biotech startups. Bioniche Global Learning specializes in developing and implementing programs to train investigators in clinical research.

“Widely recognized as a pioneer in the growing field of investigator training and patient education, UBC is constantly seeking new ways to enhance our offerings to clients,” said Catherine Spear, group president of UBC Training and Education Group. “With the addition of Bioniche, we expand our team of scientific experts, advance our existing education practice and continue our commitment to delivering leading-edge training and education solutions to support clinical research andproduct commercialization.”

Ethan D. Leder and Mark P. Clein founded BioSource in 2003 after selling their Washington-based pharmaceutical distributor firm, US Bioservices Corporation, for $180 million.

Acquiring Bioniche “represents an important milestone on our path toward building the first dedicated provider of evidence-based solutions for the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical devices industries,” Leder said.
