Monopoly for Millennials comes out, and millennials promptly blame baby boomers

Hasbro has released a new game, Monopoly for Millennials, and it’s about as condescending as it sounds.

The cover features the Monopoly Man, Rich Uncle Pennybags, holding a cup of coffee and wearing earbuds, wayfarers, and a participation medal. The box’s tagline reads: “Forget real estate. You can’t afford it anyway.”

With this mantra in mind, participants ditch the traditional task of collecting the most money in order to win; instead, the game is built around players collecting “experiences,” such as visiting a friend’s couch, eating at a vegan bistro, or attending a three-day music festival. Stops also include your parents’ basement, a thrift shop, and the farmers market. There’s also the traditional go-to-jail space.

As the game’s description on Walmart’s website notes, “Adulting is hard.” The game is already out of stock from Walmart.

Riffing on online and digital culture, game pieces include a hashtag and crying emoji. There’s also a camera and a bike.

Not everyone is happy with Hasbro’s spoof on millennials, and they’re taking it out on the baby boomers.

In the past, Monopoly has come out with other special edition versions, including Monopoly: Cheaters Edition and Monopoly: Cat Lovers’ Edition.
