The Army Corps of Engineers awarded an Arlington-based construction company a $659 million contract Tuesday to build a hospital at Fort Belvoir. The Turner-Gilbane firm is scheduled to finish building the new Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, in southern Fairfax County, by 2010. The facility will be home to some of the medical care functions currently housed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in the District. The 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission’s plans call for closing Walter Reed and reassigning its functions to Fort Belvoir and the Naval National Medical Center in Bethesda.
The hospital will cover 1.1 million square feet and will include 120 in-patient beds, a 10-bed intensive care unit, a 10-bed behavioral health unit, an emergency department and 10 operating rooms. Plans also call for two parking garages with 2,600 spaces and a helipad to allow helicopters to bring patients to the hospital.
