Ward 8 has nation’s highest jobless rate D.C.’s Ward 8 has the highest unemployment rate of any U.S. metropolitan area with a comparably sized work force, Bloomberg News reported, citing data from the Department of Employment Services.

Ward 8’s jobless rate stood at 25.2 percent in January, up from 23.1 percent in December. El Centro, Calif., had the next-highest unemployment rate at 25.1 percent.

The poverty rate in Ward 8 is now 35 percent, according to the D.C.-based Urban Institute, Bloomberg said. The average annual household income in Ward 8 between 2005 and 2009 was just over $44,000, compared with $115,000 for the District as a whole.

The second-highest jobless rate in the District is 17.1 percent in Ward 7. D.C.’s lowest unemployment rate is 2.7 percent in Ward 3.

MicroStrategy to mine data for Groupon

MicroStrategy’s latest client is daily coupon site Groupon, which will use its ability to sort through mountains of data to get a better feel for what its customers are looking for.

Groupon hopes to use all that data analysis to better understand customer behavior and purchasing habits.

Financial terms weren’t disclosed.

Groupon will use Vienna-based MicroStrategy to analyze its daily deals and gain a deeper understanding of consumer behavior by examining the types of goods and services they buy, discounts offered, location and customer demographics.

MicroStrategy (NASDAQ: MSTR) has been providing business intelligence technology for companies since 1989. Sales last year totaled $454.5 million, up 20 percent from 2009.
