America Online launches first Asian portal in India

Dulles-based AOL launched its first portal in Asia today, with the unveiling of its new site, AOL.in.

The portal, which is in English, is specifically geared toward customers in India, which AOL views as one of the biggest potential markets for the company, president Ron Grant said in a statement Thursday.

“AOL is one of just four companies with the scale, the network infrastructure, the resources and the products to compete on a global level,” Grant said.

The company expects to expand further overseas, but did not specify which markets it would pursue.

AOL spokeswoman Cindy Harvey did not return calls for comment Thursday.

The portal is the first to include AOL’s next-generation e-mail service. AOL.in will also include messaging and mobile services, as well as unique features such as Indian news, a Cityguide, and content related to topics like Bollywood and cricket.

AOL has run a service center in Bangalore since 2002, and opened two other facilities in India in 2004 and 2005 related to analysis and software development.

AOL already has portals in some European countries, and revealed an updated version of its Canadian portal Thursday as well.
