Toys R Us to return to stores this holiday season with the help of Macy’s

Toys R Us is making a return to retail stores this Christmas.

The iconic toy retailer’s owner, WHP Global, is partnering with the retailer Macy’s to make a return to brick and mortar buildings with in-store shops that will span up to 10,000 square feet in size. Macy’s, which has sold Toys R Us products online exclusively, reported that toy sales were 15 times higher for the first quarter of 2022 than the comparable period prior to its partnership with the toy retailer, according to a press release.

“The expanded partnership with Toys’R’Us advances the strategic vision of omnichannel retail brand building and the elevation of the customer experience in both stores and across digital platforms,” a Macy’s spokesperson told the Washington Examiner. “We’re encouraged by the results we’ve seen since our partnership began in August 2021 and see a large area of opportunity in the toy category.”

The in-store shops will begin opening in late July, and all will be open by Oct. 15. Shoppers can expect to see the toy retailer’s return all year round in San Francisco, Chicago, Atlanta, and Houston, among other places.

Since Toys R Us liquidated its stores in the United States in 2018 after filing for bankruptcy, the toy retailer’s parent company, Tru Kids, was brought under new leadership with WHP Global in March 2021. Yehuda Shmidman, chairman and CEO at WHP, claimed the demand for toys is at an “all-time high” and that its investment into the toy retailer “reflects our belief and passion for the brand.”
