Today, we feature Mike McDonald, 32, of Baltimore, who is now sergeant at arms of The Karb Kings, a Baltimore car club that was started 50 years ago, when Sputnik was launched and Jackie Robinson announced his retirement from baseball.
McDonald will be hosting a special anniversary car show today and Saturday at Putty Hill Station in Baltimore.
Q: So, what are your wheels?
A: A 1959 Ford Galaxy.
Q: And just why do you to drive it?
A: I?ve always been a huge Ford fan, and my all-time favorite cars have to be the 1956-59 Fords.
Q: What in the world makes a 1959 Ford Galaxy so special?
A: I love the lines and the overall look of this car. There?s just something about it. Those tailfins in the back. And when people see the car, there?s that look of “wow, man.” You just don?t see many of these cars around anymore.
Q: What was your first set of wheels?
A: A ?51 Chevy two-door Sedan. The only modern car I?ve ever owned was a 2000 F150 Ford. I just trust my ?59 Galaxy.
Q: What?s your most memorable driving experience ? that you want printed?
A: I think every time I drive to a show, to see the people?s expressions, that gives me quite a rush. But the most memorable experience has to be the day I bought my Galaxy. I bought it at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina, and I got to drive it around that amazing track two times.
Q: What?s in your CD player?
A: It?s an original a.m. radio in the Galaxy, so no CDs. But I like Rockabilly, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Frank Sinatra.
Q: And … your first ticket? What was it for?
A: I was 20 years old, and I got one for speeding.
