A couple in California is accusing a FedEx driver of throwing a package over their fence and crushing their small dog.
The dog, a four-pound Yorkshire terrier named Cooper, had to be euthanized because of his injuries. Mitchell Galin and Keiko Napier, of Venice, told KCBS-TV that Cooper was lounging in their front yard when the large package was thrown into the air and landed on the tiny pooch.
Galin said he ran to pick up the box and discovered Cooper lying in a pool of his blood.
The dog’s veterinarian said Cooper suffered lung and liver injuries. Galin and Napier decided to put the dog out of its misery.
“It was painful to watch your dog in pain,” Galin said of Cooper, who used to sleep in bed with the couple at night.
“We’ve just had a horrible weekend,” Napier added.
In a statement, FedEx said the company extends “our deepest sympathies to the family of the pet involved in this incident.”
“We take this matter very seriously and are working directly with those involved to determine the circumstances behind this event,” it continued. “Based on the outcome of our investigation, we will take the appropriate action.”
The family said the apology wasn’t enough.
“To me, that’s not satisfactory,” Napier said. “I feel they need to say they’re going to institute a corporate-wide mandate that drivers cannot throw packages; that’s what I want to hear. I don’t want to hear ‘we’ll look into it.’”
