American Airlines has suspended flights to Hong Kong for several weeks following a steep decline in the number of people purchasing tickets due to fears about the coronavirus.
The airline has blamed the lack of demand on the mysterious illness that popped up in January in the city of Wuhan, China, according to CNBC. The suspended trips connected Hong Kong to airports in Dallas and Los Angeles. American said the suspension will last until at least Feb. 20.
The Allied Pilots Association, which represents about 15,000 American Airlines pilots, advised all its members to refuse to work on trips to Hong Kong.
“We are pleased and proud that American Airlines is now leading with this safety decision to protect our passengers, fellow employees and communities during this uncertain time,” APA spokesman Dennis Tajer said.
Hong Kong confirmed its first fatality from the disease on Tuesday, becoming the second place outside of mainland China to lose a patient to the disease. At least 17 people in Hong Kong have confirmed cases of the virus.
American Airlines cut all service to China beginning last week and intends to keep the suspension in place through March 27. The coronavirus has infected roughly 20,000 people in China and has killed more than 400.
