D.C. firm gets $5.45M to develop next-generation mapping

A D.C. mapping company has received more than $5 million in funding from two investors, one based in Arlington.

FortiusOne Inc. received the funds from In-Q-Tel of Arlington and New York-based venture capital firm Chart Venture Partners.

The funding will help FortiusOne develop next-generation mapping technologies, some of which can be used for government intelligence purposes.

The work has commercial applications as well, according to a Wednesday news release from FortiusOne. Users can rely on the technology for such functions as finding certain neighborhoods or discovering areas of support for political candidates. Businesses can use it to determine where their target customers would most likely reside.

In-Q-Tel was launched by the CIA as a private organization devoted to investing in companies whose technologies would serve national security needs.

In-Q-Tel has an interest in a number of firms in the D.C. region. Some of these include SkyBuilt Power of Arlington; StreamBase and Inxight Federal Systems, both of Reston; Convera of Vienna; Agent Logic of Arlington; Visual Sciences and Idelix, both of McLean; FMS of Tysons Corner and Paratek of Columbia.

“The Washington, D.C., area offers an incredibly rich environment for entrepreneurs and innovation,” In-Q-Tel Vice President Donald Tighe said via e-mail Thursday. Tighe noted that the greater D.C. area boasts the company’s greatest number of investments after California.
